nice price deal !!! airhead continues to impress and confound with his run of releases on r&s. his last release >wait/south congress< found itself gaining praise right across the board. it showcased his atmospheric guitar styles as well as his deft programming skills, resulting in some trying to pigeon-hole his sound in a post rock/electronica direction. this ep proves it not that easy to pin him down with two new tracks of fresh club music. pyramid lake again showcases his expert manipulation of samples, but this time weaves them into a drunken dance groove, full of whirring percussion and heavy bass. black ink is a bubbling, percussive roller that in the hands of a lesser producer would sound like a traincrash. it bounces along almost out of control and sucks you into its charms until it hits you with some uplifting, haunted chords, at which point it is impossible to resist.

ondon-based duo jamka return with inter alia, the latest evidence of their patient, intimate relationship with their analogue machines. from the start there’s a sense of event – we encounter clear, interlaced electronic textures, powerful analogue drones and well-placed beats. the tracks aren’t soundscapes so much as fertile electronic soundfields. patemp continuously expands in an incredibly subtle but powerful way and shows that jamka’s technical skills don’t preclude an emotional touch. on the tight and minimal anazmo, the coiled energy bears traces of minimal techno and radical electronica, but it’s beyond either of these. while the album passes quickly, it’s full of detail and the thoughtfulness and craft that have gone into it are evident. dwa offers the chance to appreciate the flow and the sheen of its analogue textures – the modernist romance of the power line hum and its promise of technological-cultural progress. jamka are known for their dynamic live performances and this energy is almost tangible on derazor. the stately igora is a strong, bold close to the album, offering surprises right till the end. the sharp, metallic details ripple through the mix and an anthemic sequence shines through. inter alia makes clear that jamka are worthy inheritors of slovakia’s proud late modernist traditions of radical architecture and electronic music. this is a work of craft that demands respect and repeated listening.

nostalgic, soulful and, of course, boogie-woogie. thats how belgian dj producer boogie belgique (aka oswald cromheecke) describes the enticing combination of styles and sources from different decades that make up his music. taking vintage inspirations, most notably from swing and jazz eras, and merging them with contemporary beats and textures is the young producers forte. this is pleasingly evident on volta, the latest boogie belgique album for the cold busted label. jungle law gives a glimpse into boogie belgiques sonic palette. tough hip hop beats and funky live guitar follow an intro of jungle ambience as a trumpet presents the melody. soon some swingy big band jazz enters the song in an almost ghostly manner, while the insistent beat keeps the dance floor moving. album opener go slow shows a different side to the coin giving the listener an uptempo broken beat rhythm, some bouncy bass guitar, snippets of string loops, and a lovely, forlorn vocal line that echoes the past. its a beautiful concoction, and boogie belgique delivers on many aspects of this style throughout his eleven track album. volta is a satisfying trip in an aural time machine.
